NetWorth Privacy Policy
NetWorth is a net worth tracker for iPhone and Android, made by Alexander L Davis ("I", "me"). It is built so that your financial data stays with you. This policy explains what the app stores, the little it sends anywhere, and why.
- Your balances, assets, categories, notes and goals never leave your device unless you turn on backup to your own iCloud Drive or Google Drive, and then only encrypted.
- No account, no sign-up, no bank logins. I have no server that stores your data.
- I collect anonymous usage statistics and crash reports to fix bugs and improve the app. They contain no amounts and are not linked to who you are.
- No ads, no tracking across other apps, and no selling of data.
Data that stays on your device
Everything you enter (your assets and debts, their balances, categories, entries, notes, goals, financial independence settings and app settings) is kept in a database on your device. The database is encrypted, and its key is held in your device's secure keychain. I can't see any of it.
If you turn on the app lock, Face ID, Touch ID, fingerprint or your passcode is checked by your device's operating system. NetWorth never receives your biometric data.
Backups to your own cloud
If you turn on backup, NetWorth saves an encrypted copy of the database once a week to your own iCloud Drive (iPhone) or to a private app folder in your own Google Drive (Android). On Android you sign in with Google for this, and the app asks only for access to its own app folder, not the rest of your Drive. The key that unlocks the backup is kept separately in your iCloud Keychain or Google account, so a new phone signed in to the same account can restore it. The backup is stored by Apple or Google under their privacy policies; I have no access to it. You can turn backup off at any time.
Exports and CSV files you create are saved or shared wherever you choose. They are not encrypted, so keep them somewhere safe.
Data the app sends
| What | Sent to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Usage statistics: which screens are opened and events such as "saved an entry" or "turned on the reminder", with a random app installation ID, device model, operating system and app version, and approximate country | Google Analytics for Firebase | To understand which features are used and improve the app. No amounts, asset names or notes are included. In the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland the app asks before sending any; everywhere you can turn it off in Settings → Security & privacy. |
| Crash reports and performance data: the error, the screens and taps leading up to it, device model, operating system and app version | Sentry | To find and fix crashes and slow screens. Only sent from released versions of the app, without your IP address. |
| A date and a list of currency codes, only if you hold assets in more than one currency | exchangeratesapi.io | To get the exchange rates for that date. No amounts are sent. |
| Purchases of NetWorth Pro | Apple App Store or Google Play | Payments are handled entirely by Apple or Google. I never see your payment details. The app only checks with the store whether you have Pro. |
Like any internet request, these services can see your device's IP address when the app connects to them. None of this data is linked to your name, email or financial data, and none of it is used to track you across other apps or websites or to show you ads. The app doesn't use your device's advertising identifier.
Reminders
The optional monthly reminder is a notification scheduled on your device. It doesn't use a push notification server.
How long data is kept
Data on your device stays until you delete it or remove the app. Things you delete go to Recently deleted, where you can restore them or remove them for good. Analytics and crash data are kept by Google and Sentry for a limited period under their own retention settings, and then deleted.
Your choices and rights
- You can delete any of your data in the app, or all of it by removing the app and turning off backup.
- You can turn backup off, and delete the backup from your iCloud Drive or Google Drive settings.
- You can stop sharing usage statistics in Settings → Security & privacy. Turning it off also deletes the app's analytics ID on your device.
- Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU and UK, or the CCPA in California), you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal data held about you. Because I don't hold your financial data, and the statistics and crash reports are not linked to your identity, there is usually nothing I can look up. If you have a request, email me and I'll help as far as I can.
Children
NetWorth is not directed at children under 13, and I don't knowingly collect personal data from them.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date. Significant changes will also be mentioned in the app's release notes.
